I really liked reading your perspective. It really makes sense. As a first grade teacher, I have given up the teacher's desk because there is no room to put one and still have space for all the things I think are important. I usually decorate some high shelves that they cannot reach with "me" so they know who I am as an individual. But you make me want to rethink this if I every teach in a classroom with enough space. Thanks for sharing!

"Who you are screams so loudly, I cannot hear what you say to the contrary" -- Ralph Waldo Emerson.

I agree with Teri. We teach from who we are. Having objects that reflect your personality reveals your humanness, and your personality... two things that garner respect in all relationships... in or outside of the classroom.

I totally agree. Teaching is so much more than just standing in front of some kids and telling them stuff - we teach from who we are, and so I think it's great that we bring a little of who we are into the space.

The teacher is a presence too- totally agree that such space shouldn't be given up. There's also a need to remind students who they're supposed to be paying attention to.
